Dr Tan Qing Ting

Special Interest in Breast Cancer in Young Women

Young women diagnosed with breast cancer often have priorities that extend beyond cancer treatment alone. Alongside achieving optimal cancer control, many women wish to preserve their breast appearance, maintain body confidence and protect future fertility and pregnancy options.

Dr Tan has a longstanding interest in caring for younger women with breast cancer. She tailors treatment to each patient's individual circumstances, diagnosis and goals. Where clinically appropriate, breast conserving surgery, oncoplastic techniques and minimally invasive surgical approaches may be incorporated into treatment to optimise both cancer outcomes and quality of life.

As a Global Ambassador for the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation and former KKH representative in the SingHealth Young Women with Breast Cancer (YoWo) Group, Dr Tan is committed to advancing awareness, education and care for younger women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast Surgery & Treatments

Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast Cancer Surgery

Treatment is carefully planned based on the type, size, location and stage of breast cancer while considering both oncological safety and cosmetic outcomes.

Breast Conserving Surgery

Breast Conserving Surgery

Breast conserving surgery removes the cancer while preserving as much healthy breast tissue as possible. For suitable patients, this maintains as much of the natural breast shape and appearance as possible.

Mastectomy

Mastectomy

Mastectomy removes the breast tissue when breast conserving surgery is not an appropriate treatment option. Skin-sparing or nipple-sparing mastectomy may be suitable for selected patients. Options for breast reconstruction will also be discussed as part of your treatment plan.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Combines breast cancer excision with plastic surgery techniques to preserve and improve the appearance of the breast while maintaining oncological safety. This approach aims to achieve the best possible cancer and cosmetic outcomes.

Minimally Invasive Breast Surgery

Minimally Invasive Breast Surgery

Uses smaller or strategically placed incisions and specialised tools and techniques to minimise visible scarring while effectively treating selected breast conditions. Suitability depends on your breast condition, tumour characteristics and treatment goals.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should I see a breast surgeon in Singapore?

You should seek assessment if you notice a new breast lump, nipple discharge, persistent breast pain, skin changes or have abnormal breast imaging. Women with a strong family history of breast cancer may benefit from specialist consultation.

Are all breast lumps cancerous?

No. Many breast lumps are benign, such as cysts or fibroadenomas. However, all new breast lumps should be evaluated by a qualified breast specialist to determine the underlying cause.

Will I need surgery for my breast lump?

Not always. Many benign breast lumps can be safely monitored. Treatment recommendations depend on the type of lump, your symptoms, imaging findings and biopsy results.

Can young women get breast cancer?

Yes. Although breast cancer is more common in older women, it can also affect younger women. Young women diagnosed with breast cancer face additional considerations such as fertility preservation, pregnancy, hereditary cancer risk and long-term survivorship. Dr Tan incorporates these considerations into her treatment plan tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and goals.

Is minimally invasive breast surgery suitable for everyone?

Minimally invasive breast surgery may be an option for selected patients, depending on breast size, tumour size and tumour location. During your consultation, Dr Tan will recommend the most appropriate surgical approach based on your diagnosis and treatment goals.

What should I expect during my first consultation?

During your consultation, Dr Tan will review your symptoms, medical history and any previous breast imaging. She will perform a clinical breast examination and may recommend additional investigations such as a mammogram, breast ultrasound or biopsy, depending on your individual needs. Your diagnosis and treatment options will be explained clearly so you can make an informed decision.

Do I need a referral to see Dr Tan Qing Ting?

No. You can book an appointment directly without a referral. If you have previous mammograms, breast ultrasound images, biopsy reports or other medical records, bringing them to your consultation will help facilitate your assessment.
