Not Sure If You Should See a Colorectal Surgeon?

Consider seeing a colorectal surgeon if you experience:

  • Blood in your stools or rectal bleeding
  • Persistent constipation or diarrhoea
  • Changes in your usual bowel habits
  • Pain during or after bowel movements
  • A lump, swelling or discomfort around the anus
  • Persistent anal itching or irritation
  • Pus or discharge around the anus
  • Persistent abdominal pain or bloating
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Recurrent anal abscesses

These symptoms can have several possible causes. An assessment can help identify what may be causing them and whether further investigation is needed.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Screening can help detect colorectal polyps and early changes before symptoms develop.

Experience in Complex Pelvic Tumour Surgery

Some colorectal and pelvic cancers can extend beyond the organ where they first developed and involve surrounding structures.

Managing these conditions may require a multidisciplinary team and more complex surgical planning.

Dr Toh completed further training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney with a particular focus on pelvic exenteration surgery for locally advanced pelvic tumours.

After returning to Singapore, she became a founding member of the SingHealth Pelvic Exenteration Unit.

Her experience also includes laparoscopic colorectal surgery and endoscopic techniques.

Supporting Patients Through Cancer Care

A cancer diagnosis can affect more than a patient's physical health and mental wellbeing.

While managing patients with advanced cancers, Dr Toh recognises the importance of providing patients and their caregivers with information and emotional support throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

She subsequently worked with a team from the National University of Singapore to develop a mobile application designed to provide information and psychosocial support for patients and caregivers navigating cancer treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does a colorectal surgeon treat?

A colorectal surgeon specialises in conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus.

These include haemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistulas, colorectal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer and other conditions affecting the bowel and anal region.

When Should I See a Colorectal Surgeon?

You may consider seeing a colorectal surgeon if you have persistent rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, anal pain, a lump around the anus, recurrent anal infections or other ongoing bowel related symptoms.

You may also be referred to a colorectal surgeon following an abnormal investigation or diagnosis involving the colon or rectum.

Does Seeing a colorectal surgeon mean I will need surgery?

No. Many colorectal conditions can be managed without surgery. Your doctor will first assess your symptoms and diagnosis before discussing suitable treatment options.

Surgery is recommended only when appropriate for the condition and individual patient.

Should I see a doctor if I notice blood in my stool?

Rectal bleeding can have several causes.

Common causes include haemorrhoids and anal fissures, but bleeding can also be associated with other conditions affecting the colon or rectum.

If the bleeding persists, keeps returning or occurs together with other changes such as altered bowel habits, abdominal symptoms or unexplained weight loss, speak to a doctor for an assessment.

When might I need a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy may be recommended to investigate symptoms such as persistent rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms.

It may also be performed as part of colorectal cancer screening or follow- up of previously detected polyps.

Whether you require a colonoscopy depends on your symptoms, age, medical history and individual risk factors.

What is minimally invasive colorectal surgery?

Minimally invasive colorectal surgery uses small incisions and specialised instruments to perform certain colorectal operations. Laparoscopic surgery is one example.

Whether minimally invasive surgery is suitable depends on the condition being treated, previous surgery, anatomy and other individual factors.

What is pelvic exenteration surgery?

Pelvic exenteration is an extensive operation used in selected cases of locally advanced or recurrent cancers affecting several structures within the pelvis.  Because of the complexity of the procedure, patients are usually assessed by a multidisciplinary team before treatment is recommended.

What should I bring to my colorectal appointment?

Where available, bring your identification documents, referral letter, previous medical reports, blood test results, colonoscopy or endoscopy reports, Imaging reports or scans and lists of your current medications.

Can I use my insurance for colonoscopy?

Insurance coverage depends on your policy and provider. Dr.Toh Ee Lin is on multiple insurance panels, and some consultations or procedures may be claimable depending on your plan. Check with the clinic or your insurance provider in advance to confirm your coverage, eligibility, and any required documents.
